What is the QoS for telecommunications networks?

Quality of Service or QoS Questions – are the main issues that may occur while the telecommunications networks activity, these are the security and quality issues, the errors in the networks that should be monitored simultaneously.

In networks based on the TCP / IP stack, the high-quality traffic service, sensitive to delays, is not provided by default. When using TCP, there is a guarantee of reliable delivery of information, but its transfer can be carried out with unpredictable delays. UDP is characterized by minimization of delays, but there is no guarantee of the correct delivery of the packet.

At the same time, the quality of voice traffic is highly dependent on the transmission quality, and in a network where the mechanisms guaranteeing the appropriate quality are not implemented, the implementation of IP telephony may not satisfy the requirements of the users.

The main indicators of service quality are network bandwidth and transmission delay. The delay is defined as the time elapsed from the moment the packet was sent until it was received.

Also, there are such characteristics as the availability of the network and its reliability (estimated by the results of monitoring the level of service for a long time, or by the coefficient of use).

To improve the quality of communication, the following mechanisms are used:

  • When an overload of one of the communication channels the traffic is delivered with backup routes.
  • Reservation of communication channel resources at the time of connection.
  • Traffic prioritization. It allows you to mark packets in accordance with their importance level and to perform service based on the labels.

As it was mentioned earlier, voice traffic is extremely sensitive to transmission delays. The maximum delay time should not exceed 400 ms (this includes the processing time of information at the end stations).

There are two main types of delays:

  • Delay in encoding information in voice gateways or terminal equipment. Reduced by improving the algorithms of processing and converting voice.

Delay introduced by the transmission network. Reduced by improving the network infrastructure, in particular, by reducing the number of routers and using high-speed channels.
